Blackwell’s Book Services makes first Ebook Library sale in Africa
Ebook collections continue to have growing
worldwide impact
January 12, 2005 - LAKE OSWEGO, OREGON - The African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) has announced the selection of Blackwell’s Book Services and Ebook Library as the primary providers of print and digital materials for its Library and Information Centre. Based in Harare, Zimbabwe, the mission of the ACBF is to foster and support sustainable human and institutional capacity for poverty reduction in Africa. The Library and Information Centre is a central part of the institution’s strategic mission, as it provides information and research support to local and foreign researchers, policy-makers, government ministries and staff.
Kari Paulson, General Manager Ebook Library, states that "working with the African Capacity Building Foundation is a testament to the accessibility and immediacy of electronic books. That a company in West Australia can immediately fulfill an order for a library in Zimbabwe through an American distributor without any paper passing hands or borders is something to marvel at." Rowland Shuttleworth, Blackwell’s Sales Manager in Africa, worked with Ebook Library to create a content list and platform that would accommodate the current and ongoing resource needs of the ACBF Library and Information Centre.
Jasper Muvezwa, Library Head, saw an opportunity to provide greater access to content for both local and remote users through this unique arrangement with Ebook Library and Blackwell’s Book Services. The Library and Information Centre’s mission is to enable staff and other users to obtain with the greatest speed, convenience and
economy, materials and information needed in the execution of their duties. With a collection strength in the development of Sub-Saharan Africa, the library provides in-house automated bibliographical and reference services to ACBF staff in support of their ongoing projects as well as acting as an information and reference center in capacity building literature to local and foreign researchers, policy-makers, staff and members of other organizations, government ministries, tertiary institutions; public sector; private sector and civil society.

EBL rounds out a strong electronic offering for James Bennett
James Bennett to distribute Ebook Library in Australasia
January 10, 2005/Perth - Ebooks Corporation, Australian-based supplier of electronic books, today announced an Agreement with James Bennett for distribution of Ebook Library (EBL) in Australia and New Zealand. The arrangement will see EBL titles integrated and available for purchase through James Bennett’s online catalogue, JBO, in early 2005.
EBL is a new internet service that gives university students and library patrons full access to thousands of books via their library’s web interface. Ebooks Corporation developed EBL in collaboration with leading academic publishers and libraries in Australia, the US, the UK and Europe. EBL is the first Australian service of this kind and boasts some unique features.
EBL utilises a patented system called "non-linear lending"™, which means that the same book can be read online simultaneously by a multitude of students. In a world first, libraries can also rent a book from EBL, rather than buying it outright. In this way, requests for obscure books can be fulfilled without the library having to buy books that will only be used once. Librarians can even assemble collections of chapters from different ebooks and bundle them into an online "e-pack".
EBL has its headquarters in Perth, Western Australia, and James Bennett’s is based in Sydney. This all-Australian partnership will help ensure a comprehensive sales and support network for the ebook service throughout Australia and New Zealand. The integration of EBL titles into JBO will streamline the acquisition of ebooks in the region, enabling James Bennett’s customers to search, browse and purchase EBL titles along with their print books and other items.
Kari Paulson, General Manager of EBL said, "The interest in EBL amongst Australian libraries has been huge. Bennetts’ well-deserved reputation for excellent service will help us to achieve a more solid presence and service level in Australia and New Zealand. We are pleased to be working with Bennett’s in our home base, to ensure the highest levels of convenience, service and support to our customers."
Chris von Hinckeldey, Managing Director of James Bennett said, "We are looking forward to working with EBL and further enhancing our ebook and digital reference offerings to the Australasian library market. EBL has focused on meeting the specific needs of academic and research-based libraries, and we are delighted to be chosen as their distribution partner in this part of the world."

E-Publishing Impact on Acquisition and Interlibrary Loan
Paula D. Watson
Director of Electronic Information Services
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library
Excerpt from the review.."This newest entry into the e-book aggregator/distributor marketplace was conceived and created in consultation with librarians and publishers by Ebooks Corp., the Australian online bookseller. EBL announced it's existance at the 2004 ALA conference and will probably go live in the fall. Focusing on the drawbacks of existing systems, EBL intends to build a better
mousetrap. It has set out to offer flexible options for publishers to manage
access to their content and for librarians to present it to their users." EBL presents an example of how an online system can be designed to adapt to a range of requirements. The flexibility in pricing is a plus. The Non-Linear Lending Model provides a way to address multiuser access and peak-use periods.
The reserves plan allows simultaneous circulation of a volume and use of a chapter for reserve.
All these examples illustrate both the beauty of how much can be done in the online environment…libraries can make the online environment simple by taking advantage of only some of the opportunities offered by EBL’s finely tuned solution for maximizing their investment in e-books. Separating the purchase of the platform from the acquisition of the content and selling the platform at a reasonable cost coverable in several different ways are truly advanced ideas.”

Other features of EBL include digital interlibrary lending, unique ebook reserve functionality and lending by the chapter. eBook titles will be able to be browsed online and then downloaded to a desktop, laptop, or hand-held device for use offline. The system will allow patrons to perform full text searches across their library’s entire ebook collection.
The impetus to develop EBL was client driven. Unable to find an existing ebook library solution that was suitable for his specialized research environment, Jens Vigen, Scientific Information Officer at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva approached eBooks Corporation. CERN’s Education and Technology Transfer Division is now working closely with eBooks Corporation to shape an ebook lending product that meets the special needs of research and academic libraries.
Vigen says, “CERN gave the world the Word Wide Web in the early 1990’s. It is appropriate that we should continue to work on projects that promote innovation in the transfer of information and technology.” He explains, “CERN Library has been involved in electronic publishing since the Web began. With the development of electronic journals we realized too late that we should have put in a foot earlier as it has taken effort to convince publishers to redesign their products after they had been released. With this in mind, we are now actively doing something for the electronic book so that the industry will come up with products that correspond to the needs of scientific libraries.”
eBooks Corporation has specialized in the production and distribution of digital books since 1997, and launched one of the world’s first ebook stores (ebooks.com) in 2000.
Stephen Cole, Founder and Managing Director of eBooks Corporation says, “We have refined the distribution of ebooks in our retail channel and are now expanding our distribution to academic libraries. We come to the library arena with a deep understanding of ebook technology and its uses. Building on our experience we’re creating a lending platform which will bring tremendous flexibility to library patrons and deliver real efficiencies and cost savings to academic and research libraries. “We’re very conscious of the many commercial and ideological sensitivities surrounding digital libraries, and are determined that EBL will live up to the expectations of patrons, libraries, publishers and authors. EBL will do what everyone thought digital libraries were supposed to do.
EBL will offer an extensive academic catalogue with a particular focus on STM titles and will feature an extensive listing of listing of ebooks by Australian publishers.
